Let me confess up front – I didn’t do a lot of research on this. So it’s not truly a historical piece. But I have lived through several phases of Passive Income history, so I feel qualified to speak on the subject.

The Early Days

I’m sure that as far back as history goes, people were dreaming of Passive income. Imagine, sitting in your cave, having foot delivered to you – even having cooked food delivered. Without ever having to venture out in the summer heat or the freezing cold.

So even though no money was exchanged, there was that dream of having everything you needed provided for you – with no effort.

Additional Disclaimer: My passive income experience does not date back to the early days, just in case you were wondering.

Royalty

While historical scholars may disagree, it’s possible that Royalty may have been the next best thing to passive income. After all, you sat there, others served you, you didn’t really have to work – other than to pronounce a few laws here and there. Definitely a passive lifestyle, once you got past the conquering and fighting for your kingdom phase.

Additional Disclaimer: I am not royalty.

America’s Frontier

Fast forward a few hundred years and picture yourself in the early twentieth century. By then everyone recognized what Passive Income meant – it meant having your own oil well, cranking out profits for you, day after day. To current times, it’s still mighty handy to have your oil well royalties pouring into your banking account.

Full Disclosure: I own OnlineOilWells.com

Recent Online Passive Revenue

There have been several periods of Passive Income explosions online. Here are some of the highlights:

Automated Sales Process – With the growing Internet of the mid-1990’s, marketers could now set up a sales page and a download page – and know that their customers could get their product, even if the marketer took a vacation! The revenue just kept coming in – with no outward effort on their part.

This was probably the first use of the phrase “I couldn’t turn it off if I tried.”

Associates and Affiliates programs – In 1996 Amazon was the first to announce a way for “regular people” to get paid to refer customers to them online. That method of revenue has exploded to a multi-billion dollar industry.

Whether you earn passive revenue as an affiliate – or you are the business owner with affiliates sending you business, it’s often a no-effort method for earning revenue.

Autoresponders – With the invention of email-based autoresponders in the late 1990’s marketers now had a way to send automated sales messages. That meant that they could pre-schedule messages to go out, even when they were not in the office. This led to the ongoing stream of “I can’t turn it off, even if I try.”

Adsense – Google shook the world of Passive income with the announcement of the Adsense program in 2003. Suddenly you could put ads on your website and earn revenue when someone clicked on them – with no effort on your part. It was totally passive revenue.

The checks from Google continue to escalate to this day with the advent of site-building software that rapidly churns out one site after another, each dedicated to earning Adsense revenue, quickly and passively. While the rules for the types of sites required to pull off this seemingly effortless feat continue to change, many people continue to use Adsense revenue to both augment and replace their income.

Automated Income Streams – Currently the Holy Grail for Passive Income, many programs purport to have the perfect system. All involve a little bit of work on your part up front, then “set it and forget it” and the checks start pouring in.

Is it a myth? CAN you create passive income online? I’ll let you be the judge of that.

As for me – while I have enjoyed all of the methods released in the modern era, I believe there is always room for improvement. So I’ll be taking a new course on automated income starting Tuesday, July 14th.

Join me and others, as we learn the latest passive income program.

The recent launch of Silomatic from Jeff Alderson has caused quite a stir in the marketplace. You’ve probably received several emails about it already.

But do you need Silomatic? Is it appropriate for your business? Here are a few observations and questions to help you find out…

First, Silomatic is from Jeff Alderson, a respected name in Internet marketing – especially in creating software tools for your marketing. His software is good, efficient, and reliable. So as far as the technical aspect of the software, I highly recommend it.

Second, Jeff spends a lot of time watching the search engines and figuring out what works – and what doesn’t. That’s why he’s come up with this new software – based on his observations, multiple test sites, and a lot of research and development. So as for the effectiveness of the sites produced by the software, I am confident they are good.

But is it for you and your business?

If you are an information marketer who sells your own products and builds sales sites to do that, this tool won’t fit that model. For you, skip it.

If you are new to Internet marketing and don’t have a clue about site building or html, this is not where I would recommend you start.

If you are wanting to build a site in a niche market and you haven’t started yet, this looks to be an excellent way to start. It has all the right ingredients and will definitely save you time.

If you are an experienced marketer and want to expand your sites or go into a new niche, this will be a perfect match for you. Not only will you be able to get your sites up faster, but you’ll also be able to see the types of sites constructed and apply those same Google-friendly constructs to your existing sites. So I say go for it!

If you already have some sites and want to drive traffic to them (whether they’re information product sales sites or content sites), this tool will definitely help. By building a new site with exactly the recipe Google is currently looking for, you’ll find yourself in a better position in the search results. And those high ranking pages will lead to your existing sites – bringing even more visitors.

Next Steps

I definitely recommend you take a look at Silomatic and watch the video in this new window. You’ll be able to tell almost immediately whether or not this resonates with your style and your business model.

Should we be purchasing foreign language domains? If you want to “own” a niche, I think you should definitely consider it. It’s early in the game, but once the dotcom you want is gone, it’s gone.

Here’s a dollar-saving tip: From now till the end of 2006, Dotster has domains on sale 2-for-1 (the second domain costs $1). Plus you can add privacy to any domain for just a dollar. It’s a good bargain here at the end of the year. (Click on the Dollar Days ad for details.)

Private Label Rights(PLR) products generally provide you the right to make them your own. That’s the intent of “private label.” You can claim authorship. You can use the content in any way allowed within the licensing for the content.

That’s one of the reasons it’s important to read and save a copy of the license for each site from which you purchase content. Each site owner offers different rights. So while one person allows you to use the content as is, another requires that you rewrite it before adding your name. One person may encourage you to use the content in pieces on multiple sites – another only allows you to create an ebook with the content. So read the license carefully before you buy a PLR product.

So how do you use PLR content?

Many people take the articles and add them to content sites or content blogs, adding Adsense in order to generate click revenue. Public Speaker Online is an example of this type of site.

Others take the original articles and “spin” them into 10 different versions of the articles, then post them on content sites and blogs. Spinning is generally done with software, either on your desktop or online. Private Label Rights Integrator is an example of this type of software.

This “spinning” keeps them from having “duplicate content” on their sites, which is a concern many people have, thinking the search engines will punish them for it with poor rankings. (Editor’s note: Not all marketers agree with the duplicate content issue. I, for one, do not believe the search engines are concerned that the same article appears on multiple sites – or they would not support news sites with the same press release on every site.)

With some PLR content owners create ebooks or special reports. A site such as Nicheology is set up to supply you with two new ebooks every month. However, you are free to break up the content into artciles or use the content on sites and blogs.

If you prefer audio, you could read the content and create audio articles or audio books for sale or for free online.

PLR content offers an unlimited number of uses – it all depends on your creativity, your ambition and the license for the content.

Â

Private Label Rights or PLR as they are commonly referred to are products that grant you the right to put your own name on them, as if you are the author. You can also rewrite, edit and generally make them your own. It’s like having a product creator on your staff!

They do the work and you get the credit. PLR is a relatively recent addition to the Internet marketing mix – and it’s taken off like gang-busters! There are many sites that offer PLR content – from articles, to ebooks to audios to videos. And each follows one of two models:

1) a large group of products released as a bundle (SourceCode Blowout is an example) or

2) a monthly membership site that releases a set of materials on a schedule.

Some of the most popular PLR sites include:

Private Label Home Improvement Articles – If home improvement, real estate, etc are your niches, this may be a good investment for you to generate content.

Niche Health Articles – exactly what they say they are – a collection of health articles each month. If this is your niche it may save you a lot of time.

Private Rights Articles – at least 200 articles per month spread across 4 topic areas. He also includes graphics for each topic.

Niche Articles – this is inexpensive and provides one of the most down-to-earth simple plans to follow with PLR content

Nicheology – you receive two new products per month, including sales letters for them.

ArticleQuickstart – offers 199 articles for one-time purchase. Plus there are 900 separate tips and the right to use the content in different ways offered when you click to purchase the first item.

If you use Private Label Rights (PLR) articles and products, you know it is a struggle to keep track of what you have. Each site provides you with 400 articles on a variety of topics or 250 articles on only 25 topics or 12 products – plus a bonus of 6 more products. You quickly feel overwhelmed by the sheer volume of PLR items. And trying to inventory what you own, so you can leverage those into revenue, presents a huge challenge.

Jeanette Cates & Jason Bradley at lunch in Austin

I had lunch last week with Jason Bradly. I met Jason online through one of his emails – and noticed he lived in Austin, too! So I emailed and suggested we get together face-to-face. It’s a rarity in our profession.

We had a great time talking about what we’re doing. While he’s newer in the business than I am, he has been going at it like a train on fire! I can’t believe all he has learned and applied in a short few years.

Naturally one of our topics of conversation was PLR content. Like me, he invests in many of the PLR membership sites. And like everyone else who does, he’s drowning in content!

Rather than sit back and resign himself to the problem, he created a software program called PLR Dashboard.

I hustled over immediately after lunch to pick up a copy of PLR Dashboard. And turns out it’s free!

I’ve been using it for the past week and am really pleased with what it does. First, you set up your PLR accounts – and associate each one with the location on your hard drive where you store the files. Immediately you see how many files you’ve downloaded from that service.

Then as you are putting together a project, you can search by keyword through all of your PLR content – within seconds! Looking at the content, you can choose all or some of the articles and put them into a new project folder.

PLR Dashboard is a great time-saving tool. If you have even 100 PLR articles, you need this software! And the best part is, it’s free!

Pick up your copy today!

I know I “should” check my statistics more often – at least once a month. I know that I “should” pick up the keywords from my stats package for each domain. I know I “should” check my backlinks in all of the major search engines. I know I “should” do a lot more tracking of my Online Success.

But I don’t. Why? It’s too time-consuming!

As an example, here is the process to check the stats on ONE domain:

Log into the cpanel.

Click on the stats icon.

Click on AWStats (my preferred package).

Look at the summary.

Copy the major stats into a spreadsheet so I can track them over time.

Click to look at the robots who have visited my site.

Click to look at the keywords people have used to reach the site.

Copy the keywords and save them in a text file so I can use them for PPC ads, articles, etc.

Whew! Ten minutes later, I’ve finished ONE domain. If you have 5 domains, it will take you about an hour. If you have 50 domains – it’s more than a day’s work! And if you have more than 100 domains – well, you get the picture!

I’ve dreamed for years that there could be an easier, faster way. I’ve talked to other Internet marketers. I’ve talked to programmers. No one had a solution. Until this week!

Enter the “miracle software,” as I’m calling it. It not only checks your stats, keywords, and backlinks, but it also gives you the number of pages from each site indexed in each of the major search engines. It finds your page rank and tells you about the robots’ most recent visits. Plus it tracks the stats over time and builds a chart – for each of your domains! Sweet.

Now if that’s all it did, I would be a very happy web manager. But it doesn’t stop there.

I have more than 300 domains on one server. Imagine clicking ONE button and having the software pick up the domain names, usernames, and passwords for all of my domains. Took less than a minute! Everything else I want to do in the software uses that information – and I don’t have to enter anything else.

And here’s the clincher. I decided I wanted to add new 404 pages to all of my domains as an additional revenue stream. I was prepared to upload the pages and graphics to each of my 300 domains, one site at a time. But with the Mass FTP function, I can click ONE button and have the page and graphics uploaded to 300 sites in a matter of minutes.
Â
I don’t know about you, but I am thrilled with the possibilities this software opens. In my first hour with the software, I have saved over 40 hours of work – that I probably would never have gotten finished. I’m a better web manager and a much happier person – with more information at my fingertips. Now I can concentrate on running my business, instead of working at the clerical detail level.

I recently came across an interesting new product that’s designed to take the drudgery out of setting up and creating multiple domains on your web host. It can literally take hours off your site creation time!

If you’re only doing a site or two, then this isn’t for you. But if you’re continuously registering and setting up multiple domains on reseller or dedicated hosts, then it is definitely worth a look. Especially if you’re using any type of page generation software to put up Adsense sites.

As you know, setting up domains on cPanel hosts has always been a boring and time consuming task. But this product makes it simple and easy – and FAST!

It’s called Domain Toaster (love the name!). Domain Toaster can create an unlimited number of domains (or sub-domains) on any cPanel hosting account – doesn’t matter whether it’s a reseller, VPS or dedicated server. Just fill in a few fields, upload or paste in your domain list, click a button… and you’re done!

One of my favorite features is that it creates a web-based summary page that lets you see what you’ve done – and log into your cpanel on each of the domains with a single click. PLUS you can download all of that information as a spreadsheet. Talk about a time-saver!

Here’s a quick list of Domain Toaster’s main benefits:

* Runs on your own server. Simple one-time installation.
* Creates virtually unlimited domains from one central location.
* Lets you create subdomains just as easily.
* Eliminates logging into your admin panel and doing setup work for individual domains.
* Automatically creates usernames and passwords.
* Automatically stores domain names, usernames and passwords in an exportable database.

Right now Domain Toaster comes bundled with two other “Toaster” products – one that automatically creates SQL database and another for automating cron jobs. And as a special bonus, you also get “WordPress Toaster” – used for creating and installing WordPress blogs quickly.

To fully appreciate what Domain Toaster can do, watch the video at http://www.TamerTips.com/toaster/

P.S. And this isn’t even the “secret” product I referred to – but this sure is a time-saver. And it will compliment the secret product nicely. So be sure to take a look at the video at http://www.TamerTips.com/toaster/

You’ve probably received one of those “Don’t buy this” messages before. It’s a popular way to get your attention. See why I’m sending this one now – and why it will save you money!

Over the weekend and next week you will hear quite a bit about a new tool call Word Press Cloner.

It’s a piece of software that was designed by Rick Butts. I’ve known Rick for years and have purchased many of his tools in the past. And looking at it, Cloner appears to be another good tool from Rick.

So why am I telling you not to buy it? Because I know of something better. It hasn’t been announced yet and I’m not able to send you to a web page yet. But it blows the socks off the Cloner and every other mass blogging tool currently on the market.

So my advice is to wait. In another week or so I’ll be able to reveal the secret new tool – and you’ll be glad you waited!
