404 Pages – The Basics 101 Course

A 404 page is that ugly error page you get when you type in a URL or connect to a page that is no longer there.

What do you get? HTTP 404 – File not found. Then yada yada yada about possible solutions. We never try them – we just go to another web page instead.

Now that’s fine if you’re the surfer. But if you’re the website owner, you don’t want to lose them! You want them at your site, subscribing, buying, reading, clicking.

Enter the 404 page. This is a special file in your website designed to show up instead of the ugly 404 page that your browser provides. And the beauty of this file is that you can put anything you want on it – a subscription form, an ad for one of your products, an affiliate product, or even a special report to download. The possibilities are endless!
