Your Information Pipeline: The Secret To Making Money

By Jeanette Cates

Information comes to you in multiple formats. You’re listening to teleseminars, the audio replays, watching webinars, reading email, ebooks and articles. There is rarely a moment when you are not consuming some type of information.

Information coming in is great when you are in a learning mode. All of us have had the experience of getting excited about a new topic – then consuming everything we can get our hands on to learn more about it. It may have been your new puppy, your new car or your new computer. Regardless of the topic, you recognize the symptoms – insatiable curiosity and appetite for information.

The problem with that behavior comes when you don’t step out of the learning mode into the action mode. You see the symptoms in every area of interest – someone becomes a Learner – but never seems to take action. Particularly in money-making endeavors like real-estate investing, business opportunities and making money online, this is a self-defeating pattern seen in a lot of “newbies.”

So what is the cause of this problem – that someone continues to learn but never earns? In fact, it seems that the longer they are in a topic, the less action they take.

Their information pipeline is full. And until they can clean it out and “reverse the flow” they are stuck.

Your information pipe is a predetermined size. When you first start learning a topic, new information is flowing in. But it doesn’t fill the pipe, so you still have some information flowing out in the form of action.

But when your actions don’t yield the results you want, you go looking for more information input. The cycle repeats until your pipeline is so full of incoming information – that there is no space for outgoing information.

The best thing you can do is stop the input! Stop reading emails, stop buying products, stop reading sales letters, stop listening to new ideas. You cannot move forward until you have stopped the influx of new information.

Once you have stopped the flow inward, start the outward flow. Write an article. Write a blog post. Post to a forum. Answer a question. Get into the habit of sharing *your* information with others. The information doesn’t have to be perfect – it just needs to be outgoing information.

When you begin to practice flowing information out, you will be amazed at the results. You’ll get more traffic to your website. You’ll generate more leads. You’ll find people who want to do business with you. You’ll start to make money.

The key to this process is to step out of your comfort zone. You are comfortable learning and absorbing information. You’ve been conditioned for years to be a good student. You’re in the zone of being a learner.

But no one pays you to learn. No one pays you for being a walking encyclopedia of knowledge on a topic. It’s only when you begin to share your knowledge that you get the recognition you deserve – and the money along with it.

Resolve today to “reverse the flow” of information in your life. You will see results almost immediately, both internally as your attitude improves. And externally as people and profits come your way.

Clean out your Information Pipeline and watch the profits flow.

ah, that comfort zone, Dr. Cates. We all know about that but until you smacked us up aside the head with what to do about it, many of us are paralyzed within it…thanks for this succinct but masterful reminder that people are not going to hop into our brains but will hop onto our websites/blogs IF we do something there to attract them. I know that you have gotten me in a habit I didn’t really have until your Online Success Basics course. Now I find myself looking all over for something to post on the blog you had us create.
Thanks again for all your help!

I’m an avid learner, however I like “having a plan” too. Before your “Online Success Basics” class, I found the “action steps” in many programs were more like bounding leaps than incremental steps, so I was soon up against a hurdle that brought me to a screaching halt and sent me “back to learning”. It is a vicious cycle.
The 8 Modules of “Online Success Basics” are designed to build on each other and allow for as much expansion as a person wants. Now I continuing the joy of learning as well as the satisfaction of action with the outcome being results!
Now the “Information Pipeline” is in balance: input in, action out! Thanks for the basics!

Dr. Jeanette: You are SO right on. If I get one more email from an “internet guru” exclaiming how to make $100,000 in a nanosecond, I’m going to write Al Gore and tell him that inventing the internet was a bad idea. On a more serious note, I am unsubscribing as fast as I can so I CAN get something done. I have been involved in marketing for over 40 years but, am a novice at internet marketing so I do need information. I am also cutting back on the plethora of teleseminars that end up being a “sales pitch” for information the presenter is trying to sell. My comments are not intended to be a blanket indictment of all internet gurus. There is a great need for people like you who provide useable information to help us “internet baby bloomers”. Keep sending the good “stuff”.
Thank you,
Coach Bud

Great information. I try to relay information like this to my subscribers on a consistent basis. Sometimes it doesn’t seem to sink in though.

Once this strategy DOES sink in however, I see them really take off with their online business endeavors.

Thanks again for reminding us of the importance of action.

Coach Bud – Good points. We’ve all gone through that email overwhelm! Here’s a tact to take. Instead of unsubscribing (because you CAN learn a lot of from the emails, both in how they are written and sequenced as well as the information), set up a separate email account where only newsletters go. I use a gmail account so I can easily sort them.

That way I have an archive of the sequences but I only check it when I’m in the learning mode. Otherwise, the newsletters never come to me – I go get them when I’m ready.

Thanks again for your contributions!

I agree. When someone is ready to hear it, they\’ll take the information and run with it.

For example, I wrote many of the same concepts in Should I buy this product a few months back. But it was framed in a different context. So it hit people in a different place, if that\’s what they needed at the time.So we keep offering ideas in different ways.

P.S. You are always welcome to link to my articles or to reprint them in your blogs or newsletters, as long as the resource links remain in tact.

I agree – I think blogging is one of the most effective, profitable and easy ways to start putting information out there! And that’s why I included it as the basis for the Online Success Basics course.

So glad you participated in the course and are sharing YOUR great insights and information in your blog.

I already have an idea of how many people you are impacting with your new blog, sharing the joys of making a living while living as a rural entrepreneur. One of the things I admire, too, is that you’ve stepped out of the online world and decided to share what you’re learning and how with people in a face-to-face setting. We who work online all the time sometimes forget not everyone is here with us, reading our blogs. So doing public presentations is a critical outlet, both for your information pipeline and your community, as well as your business.

Keep up the great work you’re doing!

Jeanette
